History

The Lake District has a wealth of history dating back around 5,000 years when early settlers used mountain rocks to fashion axes and other implements. The use of the natural resources of the area has continued through the years with mining playing a big part in the economy and migration in the Lakes. With this industry followed the railways that transported the mining bounty around the country. It wasn't until the 19th century that the lakes became more widely known through the writing of William Wordsworth. In 1951 the Lake District National Park was formed which includes the property and land owned by Beatrix Potter.
